About Susan

I’ve always been fascinated by people. What motivates us, what we reveal, what we hide, and the stories we tell ourselves about our lives.

I just didn’t always know I wanted to write about them.

I graduated from Wake Forest University with a degree in Mathematical Business and began my career on Wall Street, where I spent my days analyzing numbers and navigating the fast-paced world of finance. Eventually, my career took me into nonprofit communications and public education, where I discovered that understanding people could be every bit as complicated as understanding markets.

Along the way, I got married, became a mother to two boys, served on my local Board of Education, and started a blog called Sensible Susan. It was a place to share observations about parenting, relationships, everyday absurdities, and the occasional attempt to make sense of it all.

Somewhere along the way, I began writing fiction.

My first manuscript, The Sweet Spot, explores friendship, marriage, and the contradictions of midlife. My current work in progress, The Slow Down, takes me back to New York City in the early 2000s, where a young woman building a successful career discovers that the past doesn’t always stay where we leave it.

I’m drawn to stories about complicated women: ambitious, funny, vulnerable, occasionally irrational, and not nearly as self-aware as they think they are. I’m especially interested in the moments when the carefully constructed lives we lead collide with the things we didn’t know we wanted.

I live in New York’s Hudson Valley with my husband, two teenage sons, and our dog. When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading, practicing yoga, exploring somewhere new, or sitting beside a baseball field wondering how much longer the game could possibly last.

I still love a good spreadsheet. But these days, I’m learning that the best stories don’t always follow a plan.
